Mike McGlinchey already sees benefit from the addition of Trent Williams

Mike McGlinchey may have to face the 2020 season without his BFF Joe Staley, but the 49ers new left tackle brings his own set of benefits.

McGlinchey has been immediately impressed by Trent Williams physical abilities and athleticism. Williams, on the other hand, has been happily surprised by the vibe at 49ers headquarters since his arrival. The winning culture will only ease his return to the field. It’s like a match made for the ages.

“Even just in walk-through you still get a little jaw-dropped by how smooth and how much of an athlete he truly is at his size,” McGlinchey said via video conference on Monday. “It’s going to be cool to pick his brain over the next couple weeks here, going through training camp, once live bullets start flying and seeing him back in action.”

McGlinchey isn’t surprised by Willams’ comments about the locker room and how welcoming everyone has been. He believes it is a testament to the job that general manager John Lynch coach Kyle Shanahan have done putting the roster together.

“That’s kind of the mindset that the majority of our team has,” McGlinchey said. “We are grown men but we act like kids a lot of the time, and we have a lot of fun, and we have the ability to compete with each other at all times and fly around. “There’s just a charge of energy that’s in our building.”

McGlinchey sees both sides benefitting from the other and, like Williams, couldn’t be more excited for the season ahead.

“I think Trent has been exposed to that for the first two weeks now and it’s kind of just a re-ignitor to the career that he’s had,” McGlinchey said. “It gave him a new excitement for what we’re able to do, on top of the fact that we are all great people, and all have a lot of fun when we do what we do. But we’re also really damn good football players.”

It appears that as long as they stay healthy, the 49ers offensive line won’t skip a beat heading into 2020. They might even be better.
